Treatments done to Emeralds are not as commonly known by all. Fractures that reach the surface are sometimes filled with oils, waxes or "artificial resins". These substances reduce the visibility of the fractures and improve the apparent clarity. They have varying degrees of stability and the volume of filler material present can range from insignificant to major amounts. See pictured chart below:
